3 Arrested Over ‘Malicious’ Publication Against Elumelu

The United Bank for Africa (UBA Group) has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the circulation of “false and defamatory” claims targeting its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu.

 

In a statement, the bank described the viral reports alleging that Elumelu had divorced his wife as entirely fabricated, malicious, and intended to mislead the public while damaging his reputation.

 

 

According to the Group, the matter has been escalated to law enforcement authorities, who have begun a full investigation.

 

 

Those arrested in connection with the publication include Mr. Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Mr. Chigozie Success Ihebom and Mr. John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).

 

UBA stated that investigations were ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecutions of individuals involved in originating or amplifying the false claims.

 

The bank also issued a cease-and-desist directive to all individuals and platforms disseminating the content, urging immediate removal and preservation of all related records for potential legal proceedings.

 

Reaffirming its stance, UBA emphasized its commitment to protecting the integrity, privacy, and reputation of its leadership and brand, noting that it would pursue all available legal remedies against those found culpable.

 

The statement signed by Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing & CorporateCommunication, the bank said, “This serves as a formal notice to all individuals, platforms, and entities involved in the publication, reposting, or continued dissemination of this content to immediately cease and desist.

 

“All such parties are hereby required to: Remove the offending publication from all platforms immediately; Refrain from any further publication or amplification of similar false content and Preserve all records, including digital footprints, communications, and metadata relating to the creation and dissemination of the publication, pending further legal action

 

“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and any other remedies available under applicable law.”
