More News Archive

The Taraba State House of Assembly Monday morning elected a member of the House, Josiah Kente, as the new speaker, following the death of Haruna Tsokwa in controversial circumstances on 4th November 2013.

Tsokwa, an unrepentant supporter of Acting Governor Garba Umar, died at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, the Taraba State capital just days after escaping assassination.

Kente, the deputy majority leader of the House, was elected Speaker unanimously to lead the House.

He comes from the southern senatorial zone of the state and emerged after the members decided to leave the position in the zone where the late Tsokwa came from.

Deputy Speaker of the House, Tanko Maikerifi, who also wanted the position of Speaker, was asked to step down to allow for religious equality in the leadership of the State. The new Speaker is a Christian while Acting Governor Garba Umar, is Muslim.
