More News Archive

Twenty chairmen of state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed beleaguered National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to continue in the office despite the insistence of the breakaway faction on his removal as one of the many thorny demands for return of peace to the party.

The state chairmen met at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja on Monday, and afterwards released a communiqué, which was read by Chairman of the Conference of PDP State Chairmen, Emmanuel Agbo, expressing concerns over the crisis currently bedevilling the party.

They assured Tukur that not only would they remain aligned with him in this trying moment, they would also ensure that the ongoing division at the federal level does not resurface at the state level. The chairman equally pledged their allegiance to President, Goodluck Jonathan, whose 2015 presidential ambition the breakaway group wants called off.

Tukur thanked the state chairmen, saying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made immense contributions to the development of the country and therefore remains the custodian of the country’s unity and must always protect it.

Factional PDP Gets National Working Committee

The crisis currently rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Monday, as the faction that broke away days ago held its own convention and announced members of its National Working Committee (NWC).

Led by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, the faction has seven governors, former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, 22 senators and over 50 members of the House of Representatives. It is also hopeful that more party members would join the new PDP as hope of resolving the crises remain grim.

According to a statement signed by the faction’s national secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, stakeholders of the new PDP met in Abuja and ratified the election of members of the parallel NWC.

The new officials are Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje as Chairman, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja as Deputy National Chairman, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola as National Secretary, Hon. Maode Umar Hiliya as Deputy National Secretary.

Others are Mr. Timi Frank (National Youth Leader), Hon. Binta Koje (National Woman Leader), Mallam Nasir Issa (National Organising Secretary), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze (National Publicity Secretary), Hon. Wadada (National Financial Secretary), Mallam Tanko Isiaku Gomna (National Treasurer).

The factional PDP said the positions of the National Auditor and that of National Legal Adviser, which are zoned to the South East and South West, respectfully will be announced soon.

PDP Will Be Stronger after Crisis, Says Saraki

Former Governor of Kwara State and senator representing Kwara Central at the National Assembly, Bukola Saraki believes the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) will be stronger by the time the turbulence currently raging through its national executive is over.

Speaking with journalists at his home in Ilorin, Saraki, who has already aligned with the breakaway faction of the party led by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, said the crisis would soon be resolved.

Saraki also used the opportunity to refute rumours that his faction of the party was putting finishing touches to the process of defecting en masse to another party, saying the focus of the faction is to reposition PDP in line with the vision of its founders and the yearnings of its members.

Supporting Saraki’s thoughts, senator representing Ilorin South at the Federal House of Representatives, Dr Ahmad Alli and Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Rasak Atunwa both lauded the Baraje faction for standing up to salvage the party from the dictatorial reign of National Chairman of the other faction, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and his loyalists.

On Kwara State matters, Saraki urged losers of the recent local government rerun in Offa to explore legal opportunities of seeking redress rather than embarking on demonstrations and protests that could be hijacked by hoodlums to foment trouble.

“The interest of members of the party should be paramount in the minds of political leaders,” Saraki said.
